one explanation here - if it is the case that Google's size makes certain research difficult (a reasonable assumption given recent exodus and the demis situation). bootstrapping/blessing independent teams with Google as early investor and infra provider might actually be the smartest (only?) logical move here.
also safe to assume demis and co have considered and weighed the tradeoffs. deciding that pushing to keep talent/breakthroughs internal no longer outweighs letting them loose and capturing the upside through investment, infrastructure and sharing ideas/research
